Only 275 examples of this mid-engine supercar were built between 1992 and 1994.
Intended as a V12 4 wheel drive car back in 1988, JaguarΆs plans were cut short by the early 1990s economic recession.
In the production version, the XJ220, was equipped with the Cosworth 3.0L V6 engine from the MG Metro 6R4 Group B rally car. Further developed by TRW, by increasing capacity to 3.5L and a twin turbochargers, output reached 540 hp. This enabled the car to reach 100 Km/h from a standstill in just 3.6 seconds.
The 4-wheel drive system was dropped for the production model. Instead, a 5-speed transaxle with limited slip differential transmission was used.
The XJ220 was also the first production car to intentionally use underbody airflow to generate downforce. At 320 Km/h the Jaguar would create 1400 N of downforce.
The XJ220 held the record for the fastest production car, from 1992 untill 1993, after being clocked at 343 Km/h. It also held the production car lap record for the famous Nürburgring until the year 2000 with the time of 7:46.36.
Sir Elton John car collection has also included a similar 1992 Jaguar XJ220 model, one of the artistΆs favorite cars.
This particular car has only 500 Km on board.
