I would do three tests: A smoke test of the intake system, a backpressure test of the exhaust, and a crankcase vacuum test . You want to see no smoke, less than 2 psi backpressure at 2500-3000 rpm, and 3-6 inches of water for your vacuum reading. Any other results would indicate a problem. Find a good BMW shop that has a smoke machine, a pressure tester that screws into the primary 02 ports, and a slack-tube manometer.
