Daimler has shown the tough stance they will take if anyone attempts to infringe their trademarks. The Mercedes 300 SL in particular has legendary status and has a design that has been trademarked for decades. Therefore when a replica tried to clear customs, it was inevitably confiscated by German officials and has now been destroyed.
Daimler wanted to use the opportunity to highlight how seriously they take copyright infringement with an announcement on the subject which you can read below in the press release section.
The 300 SL coupe was originally launched back in 1954 with the signature gullwing doors and was soon followed by a roadster version in 1957. It was voted the 'sports car of the century' just before the turn of the millennium, confirming its legendary status.
The model eventually made a spiritual comeback recently with the new SLS AMG series
