Mezger engine
The GT models of the 911 - Porsche GT3 and Porsche GT2 - and Turbo models of the water-cooled 911 Series 996 and Series 997 were also equipped with a so-called Mezger engine. This consists of a cast iron engine block, the Hans Mezger had constructed, instead of the otherwise usual aluminum engine block of the other current Porsche cars. Background is more in the direction of motor sport including specific design with improved lubrication, oil recovery and promotion of a dry sump lubrication . This cope with these engines in particular, the high lateral acceleration forces, which are achieved with modern (semi) slicks in the racetrack.
