U.S. Consulate General Thessaloniki, Greece
Message for U.S. Citizens: Elimination of Thessaloniki Consular Services
March 15, 2013
The U.S. Consulate General in Thessaloniki would like to remind U.S. citizens that as of June 3, 2013, regular consular services for U.S. citizens, including passports, notarials, and reports of birth and death abroad, will be provided at the U.S. Embassy in Athens. The last day for regular American Citizens Services (ACS) appointments in Thessaloniki will be May 31, 2013. U.S. citizens will be notified of limited periodic appointment opportunities in Thessaloniki at future dates.
If you anticipate a need for consular services and wish to receive these services in Thessaloniki before June 1, we urge you to book your appointment now. Appointments for passport and citizenship services can be made here. For notarial appointments, please click here. Cases processed after April 11, 2013, may experience extended processing times and applicants will be charged a courier fee for return of the documents. For more information, please call or e-mail Courier Center at 210-751-2000.
Please call the U.S. Embassy in Athens at 210-729-4444 for after-hours U.S. citizen emergencies in Greece. To contact the Federal Benefit Unit, you can email questions to FBU.Athens@ssa.gov. FBU offers public inquiry telephone hours, by calling 210-720-2426, from 08.30 a.m. -12.30 p.m., Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Their fax number is 210-729-0509 or 210-646-9885.
We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Greece enroll in the Department of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you don't have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
We advise U.S. citizens to regularly monitor the State Department's website, where you can find current Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution. We also suggest you read the Country Specific Information for Greece. For additional information, refer to "A Safe Trip Abroad."
Contact the U.S. embassy or consulate for up-to-date information on travel restrictions. You can also call 1-888-407-4747 toll-free from within the United States and Canada, or 1-202-501-4444 from other countries. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays). Follow us on Twitter and Facebook. You can also download our free Smart Traveler App, available through iTunes and the Android market, to have travel information at your fingertips.
The U.S. Embassy in Athens is open 8:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday-Friday, except on Greek and American official holidays, listed here, and the last Wednesday of every month.
For U.S. citizen services, please contact the U.S. Embassy in Athens via email or telephone: for passports and citizenship issues, please email AthensAmericanPassports@state.gov or call 210-720-2494 between 2-4pm;
for other U.S. citizen services, please email AthensAmericanCitizenServices@state.gov or call 210-720-2414.
