If youΆve been saving your pennies, you may be interested to know that BMW will be officially launching the new F10 M5 in North America next summer, 2012. Expect cars to begin hitting showrooms in August; those of us who havenΆt been saving our pennies will have the opportunity to drool on more frugal driverΆs rides throughout the summer.

BMWBLOG can also put our name behind the hunch that the M5 will be offered in North America with the option of a manual gearbox, as well as trick carbon ceramic brakes. From our experience on Ascari race circuit, the new M5 hardly needs more powerful or fade resistant brakes to burn off speed – but those who count tenths on a track day will appreciate the weight reduction in un-sprung mass, and the better fade resistance after dozens of hard laps. It would be very difficult to improve upon brake feel from the steel-rotor baseline, but expect a slightly different feel under your right or (if youΆre particularly talented) left foot.

The M5 displays massive stopping power from all speeds – the deceleration will hang you from your seat belt. Front rotors are a massive 400 mm (15.7″) in diameter, clamped by powerful 6-piston calipers. The discs are cross-drilled at all four corners to dissipate heat. Speaking of heat, it seems cooling has been a major engineering focus on the new M5, what with 6 separate radiators behind the front fascia, and various cooling passages carved into the bodywork.

Active Sound Design delivers precise feedback.

M5 drivers will be given an even more direct reminder of their carΆs performance capability by technology that brings the distinctive sound of the high-performance V8 – in all its glory – into the cabin of the new BMW M5.

The Active Sound Design technology specially developed for the new BMW M5 takes its cues from the driving situation at any one time to deliver an accurate reproduction of the engineΆs sound through the carΆs audio system.

The systemΆs digital signal processing exchanges data directly with the engine management, allowing it to reflect the engineΆs revs and torque, and the carΆs speed over the road. The result over a smoothly driven journey is a discreet soundtrack in keeping with the harmonious and assured characteristics of the V8 powerplant. A stamp on the accelerator, meanwhile, prompts an immediate audible response to match the instantaneous – and typically M – burst of power from beneath the bonnet.

In generating its signals, Active Sound Design takes its cues from the firing sequence of the eight-cylinder engine and the frequency range of the exhaust system. This gives the driver an extremely accurate impression of current engine load and an even more intense sensation of the V8Άs high-performance characteristics. At the same time the Active Sound Design control unit ensures an even spread of sound across all five seats of the new BMW M5, while observing the legal guidelines governing noise emissions inside and outside the car. The characteristics of the sound produced by the technology also adjust to the engine settings selected by the driver. For example, switching to “Sport” or “Sport+” mode sharpens not only the engineΆs responsiveness but also the acoustic experience inside the car.

These days, numbers no longer do the talking.

We have comfortably exceeded every available record to break for the modern sports car. Fastest lap times – check. Fastest acceleration – check. Shortest braking distance – check. You get what I mean; there is so much improvement from cars of yesteryear that now we are spoilt by excellence.

We are fortunate in that sense because we, quantitatively, are now enjoying what the best of the automotive world can offer. Like the new F10 M5, for instance.

It has a score sheet that would make any school teacher proud – 552bhp, 680Nm of torque, 0-100mph in 8 seconds and a comfortable top speed in excess of 300km/h. However, like the old adage that top scoring students are not necessarily the ones who would make the most of their life in the future, there are as many reasons why the M5 doesnΆt tickle my senses as much as it should.

Glance down the spec sheet and a huge figure will immediately put off especially keen drivers: 1870kg. That is ΅onlyΆ 22kg more than the E60 M5, but then its predecessor wasnΆt a featherweight to begin with. ItΆs simple physics (like I know it enough to say…): more weight requires more power. Hence the 552bhp and more importantly, the 680 torques needed to shift the F10 as fast as an M5 should.

Qualitatively, some things have not changed, which is good. Pace is definitely still intact; in fact, this is the fastest M5 ever made. It still does luxury for 5 people in supreme comfort. It still has a boot and practicality for a family. But some things are now lost.

Where the older cars (IΆd have to go back to as far as the E34 for a comparison) were airy, friendly to drive and possessed excellent visibility, the F10 M5 feels like it has just taken the size of its larger brother, the 7-Series. I have to qualify that I havenΆt driven the new M5 – but having been behind the wheel of the F10 family, I am of the opinion that it has grown to a size too big for its own good. Consequently, it is more unwieldy, less maneuverable and a lot more difficult to place. ItΆs as if a lean frame was bloated with empty spaces below that metal bodywork that altogether makes a car unnecessarily large.

ThereΆs also the power chase. I no longer am excited by power. One of my favourite phrases which is likely to rile some people is that ΅power is cheapΆ. It is no longer such a stunning achievement to build the worldΆs most powerful engine. Garages with their home-made engineering can develop 1,000bhp reliably. The challenge now is building a car that makes the most of its power by becoming lighter and smaller, giving us all of the elements that had been lost in the process: dexterity, clarity in response and economy not by superlatives but by efficiency of performance.

IΆm also saddened that the dual clutch gearbox has all but reinforced the naysayers of the manual transmission. ΅ItΆs faster, why bother?Ά; ΅ItΆs cleaner, why bother?Ά; ΅ItΆs easier, why bother?Ά. I have no doubt that the dual clutch box is all of this – quantitatively, it is a superior product. But you know what, call me old school or silly or even certifiable, but manual gearboxes will be in the defining epoch of a generation of drivers who still bothered to drive. That which we call ΅drivingΆ is something I will always fight to preserve and protect. Hope you do too.
