The phenomenon of sunglint
On July 6, 2017, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image of sunglint on the waters around Crete and the Aegean Islands.
The phenomenon of sunglint is a matter of optics. Areas where the sea surface is smoother reflect more sunlight directly back to the satellite’s imager. In contrast, areas of rougher water appear darker because light is scattered in many more directions.
Dry, cool winds from the north, called the Etesian winds, are common over the Aegean Sea during summer. On the windward side of the islands, those winds pile up the water and disturb the surface. But as those air masses run into the islands and their rocky peaks, a “wind shadow” with much calmer winds (and seas) form on the leeward side of islands (in this case, the south sides). Darker areas amid the bright streaks could be the result of wind or water turbulence, or perhaps breaks in the wind-blocking land topography

Ένα ιδιαίτερο φαινόμενο στην Κρήτη απαθανάτισε ο Διαστημικός Σταθμός NASA
τις 6 Ιουλίου ο διαστημικός σταθμός της ΝΑSA απαθανάτισε την εικόνα του φαινομένου sunglint στα νερά γύρω από την Κρήτη και τα νησιά του Αιγαίου.
Το φαινόμενο του sunglint είναι θέμα οπτικής.
Οι περιοχές όπου η επιφάνεια της θάλασσας είναι πιο ομαλή και λεία αντανακλά περισσότερο φως ηλίου κατευθείαν στον τομογράφο του δορυφόρου. Αντίθετα, στις περιοχές που το νερό φαίνεται πιο σκοτεινό, συμβαίνει επειδή το φως είναι διάσπαρτο σε πολλές περισσότερες κατευθύνσεις.
Οι ξηροί και δροσεροί άνεμοι από το βορρά είναι συχνό φαινόμενο στο Αιγαίο κατά τη διάρκεια του καλοκαιριού.
Καθώς αυτές οι μάζες αέρα διατρέχουν τα νησιά και τις βραχώδεις κορυφές τους, μια «σκιά ανέμου» με πολύ πιο ήρεμους ανέμους (και θάλασσες) σχηματίζεται στην υπήνεμες πλευρές των νησιών (σε αυτή την περίπτωση, στις νότιες πλευρές).
Οι πιο σκοτεινές περιοχές ανάμεσα στις φωτεινές λωρίδες θα μπορούσαν να είναι αποτέλεσμα ταραγμένων ανέμων ή θαλασσών ή τοπογραφίας που εμποδίζει τον άνεμο"
