The Honda Accord has emerged as the most reliable car on Britain's roads according to a survey by Which?
A study of 84,000 cars found that it gave its owners almost no problems, with 98.5 per cent reporting that their vehicle had required no attention whatsoever last year.
The magazine based its reliability survey on whether a car had broken down, been taken back to the dealer or had any niggles over the past 12 months.
Japanese-built cars took seen of the top 10 places with Honda taking four of the top seven. The best European car as the Ford Fiesta with 96.2 per cent of owners enjoying a year of trouble-free motoring.
The performance of British-built cars was disappointing with three – the Jaguar S-type, Jaguar XF and Land Rover Discovery – featuring in the list of least reliable performers.
However according to the survey it is the Audi A5 which has caused greatest difficulties, with nearly one owner in four reporting problems.
Richard Headland, editor of Which? Car, said: "Owning a reliable car can make the difference between getting your summer holiday off to a flying start and sitting on the hard shoulder of the M6. You can't do better than the Honda Accord, which is one of the most reliable cars we've ever surveyed.
"Japanese cars in the main seem to run like clockwork, although there are a few exceptions to the rule. It's also encouraging to see good reliability scores for the best-selling Ford Fiesta and other small, economical cars."
A spokesman for Audi said that the sample was unrepresentative. "We are talking about seven cars with a problem out of a total of 8,000. We stand by the reliability of our cars."
A spokesman for Jaguar Land Rover said: "Jaguar is committed to providing a consistent high quality driving and ownership experience for all of its customers. The Which? brand Reliability Index puts Jaguar the same as other luxury car manufacturers including Mercedes-Benz and BMW.
"Quality and customer satisfaction are top priorities for Land Rover. The report findings are based on a relatively small sample of owners and largely focused on models we no longer produce and which are not truly representative of the real and quantifiable progress Land Rover is making in terms of overall quality and reliability."
