Mercedes-Benz is to unveil the S 300 Bluetec hybrid, ML 450 hybrid and F 700 concept, the latter powered by an experimental 'DiesOtto' engine, at the Frankfurt motor show on 11 September.
The S 300 Bluetec hybrid sedan features both a four-cylinder turbodiesel engine and an electric motor. The combined power output is 165kW (224hp) with maximum torque of 560Nm, similar to a large-displacement V8 gasoline engine.
The company claims that the hybrid sedan consumes just 5.4 litres of diesel per 100km (43.6mpg), equivalent to 142g/km of carbon dioxide. According to the OEM, this is about 30% less than the current average consumption and emissions performance in the large luxury sedan segment. The S 300 Bluetec hybrid has the potential to meet the most stringent emissions standards such as EU6 or the BIN5 standard for 50 US states, Mercedes-Benz claims. There is as yet no announcement concerning production of this model.
The ML 450 hybrid, meanwhile, is due to be "on the market in 2009", Mercedes-Benz says, without mentioning which regions this applies to. The model uses a two-mode hybrid drive system that has been developed in partnership with General Motors and BMW.
Unike the S 300 Bluetec hybrid, the ML 450 hybrid runs on gasoline, not diesel. No engine capacity has been announced but the combined power is claimed to be 340hp (250kW) with combined maximum torque of 480Nm. The ML 450 Hybrid consumes an average 7.7 litres per 100km (30.5mpg), equivalent to carbon dioxide emissions of 185g/km, the OEM says.
Mercedes-Benz will also debut the new F 700 concept at the Frankfurt show (images are yet to be released). This large sedan is powered by a so-called 'DiesOtto' engine which is claimed to offer the advantages of a gasoline unit with the economy of a diesel. The concept's average fuel consumption is said to be 5.3 litres of gasoline per 100km (44mpg), equivalent to carbon dioxide emissions of 127g/km.
The DiesOtto engine is a direct injection turbocharged 1.8-litre I4 that supports a switch to controlled auto ignition (CAI) under certain operating conditions such as low and medium engine speeds. The engine is claimed to produce 238hp (175kW) of power and maximum torque of 400Nm.
Key features of the DiesOtto powertrain include a hybrid module with an integrated starter/generator, a variable compression ratio and variable valve control. When starting and under full load, the fuel/air charge is ignited by a spark plug, as in a conventional spark-ignition (SI) engine.
The OEM has also announced that it will begin series production of fuel cell cars from 2010 but no further details have been revealed.
Finally, Mercedes-Benz will showcase various C-Class Bluetec versions, with and without hybrid drive, at the IAA, but is yet to provide specifics of these cars.
